Vandalia Release and Transfer Paths
Vandalia Correctional Center is an Illinois Department of Corrections institution. A person may leave the prison for mandatory supervised release, often shortened to MSR, or parole and remain under correctional supervision in the community. Another person may receive final discharge when legally eligible. A movement to another IDOC institution or another authority ends custody at Vandalia but is not a community release. The current status plus admission and release history must be read as a sequence.
Most determinate Illinois sentences do not require the Prisoner Review Board to vote on whether release should occur. IDOC's Records Office calculates the date for release to MSR under the sentence and credit rules. PRB has a distinct role in supervision terms, revocation matters, final discharge, and the remaining indeterminate parole cases. That division helps route a question to the office that can answer it.
| IDOC event | Meaning | Next record |
|---|---|---|
| Released to MSR/parole | Physical prison custody ended; supervision continues | IDOC Parole status |
| Transfer | Custody moved, not community release | IDOC location and history |
| Final discharge | Correctional commitment ended under the order | PRB order and committing-court entry |
Confirm Vandalia Release Records
Use the IDOC Individual in Custody Search for a current or former state prisoner. Search by last name, IDOC number, or birth date. An IDOC number is the strongest starting identifier. Compare the full identity, status or location, vital details, sentencing information, and admission and release dates. Do not use the county sheriff record merely because the prison is in Fayette County.
- Open the IDOC search and select the matching person by stable identifiers.
- Read the status and current or parent institution before interpreting any date.
- Review admission and release history for later admissions, returns, or transfers.
- If the result shows MSR or parole, contact IDOC Parole when the supervision route is unclear.
- For final discharge, request the PRB order and compare the committing court's satisfaction entry.
An exit from Vandalia Correctional Center may be a transfer or release to supervision. Neither event alone proves final discharge.

Vandalia Records and Contact
The official IDOC facility page identifies Vandalia Correctional Center as the institution and supplies its contact information. Facility staff can route an institution-specific question, but the public release record belongs to IDOC's statewide system and records offices.

For an existing state record, email DOC.FOIARequest@doc.illinois.gov and place FOIA in the subject line. Describe the person and the requested admission, movement, release, or discharge material with an IDOC number when known. Keep a county booking-photo request with the sheriff and an institutional-image request with IDOC because those images come from different custody systems.
IDOC Constituent Services can be reached at 217-558-2200 and through DOC.Constituent.Services@illinois.gov. The office address is 1000 E. Converse Ave., P.O. Box 19277, Springfield, IL 62794-9277, with published hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. IDOC Parole is available at 800-666-6744 for supervision routing.
Vandalia Projected Release Dates
A future IDOC date is a projection, not an accomplished release. Capture the exact live label and the date the result was checked. The research confirmed the public search categories but did not confirm one durable generic label across every dynamic detail. Do not invent a label or report a projected date as final.
730 ILCS 5/3-6-3 contains Illinois sentence-credit rules, exclusions, caps, and truth-in-sentencing floors. Specified sentences can require service of 85 percent, 75 percent, or 100 percent. A charge label alone is not enough to assign a person to a tier. The sentencing judgment, offense and sentence dates, and controlling subsection matter.
A date may change after correction of jail credit, sentence credit, disciplinary loss or restoration, another sentence, or revocation. Earned Discretionary Sentence Credit may also affect the calculation, but it should not be predicted. Questions about EDSC can go to DOC.EDSCInquiries@Illinois.gov. Verify the completed event through updated IDOC history.
Vandalia MSR and Final Discharge
Mandatory supervised release is a period of correctional supervision after physical prison custody. It is not the same as probation, which is imposed and supervised through the court system. A person shown on MSR has left the institution but has not reached final discharge. An absconder or revocation issue is a supervision-enforcement event and does not mean the person was never released.
The PRB MSR explanation states that the Records Office calculates determinate release. IDOC Parole handles community supervision. Under Illinois law, a PRB final-discharge order takes effect on entry, PRB notifies the committing clerk, and the clerk records that the sentence or commitment is satisfied. The order and court entry offer stronger final-discharge proof than a prison exit alone.
- MSR
- Community supervision after release from an IDOC institution.
- Transfer
- Movement to another custodial location or authority.
- Final discharge
- The legal end of the correctional commitment under the governing order.
Vandalia Facility History and Scale
IDOC describes Vandalia Correctional Center as a minimum-security adult male institution that opened in 1921. It began as Illinois's prison-farm operation and uses a dormitory setting. The official description lists 113 buildings on 1,520 acres, with eight acres inside the perimeter fence. These figures describe the facility, not a release count or current custody result.
The population and capacity figures are date-labeled context from the official facility page. They should not be treated as current values after that date. They also reveal nothing about a named person's release, projected date, supervision, or discharge.
IDOC describes programming meant to support reentry, but the public facility page does not publish a recent-release calendar. A program milestone is not proof of a release date. Use the offender search and official records for the individual event.
Vandalia Images and Identity
An IDOC detail may show an institutional image. That image belongs to the state corrections record and is not necessarily the booking photograph created during an earlier Fayette County jail episode. Keep the two sources distinct. A picture can help match a person, but it does not prove release, transfer, final discharge, or the absence of another hold.
Use the IDOC number, name, birth date, physical details, sentencing data, and admission sequence together. Common names can produce several results. A past release followed by a later admission changes the meaning of the older event, so the full timeline matters.
If an institutional image or history is needed as an official record, ask IDOC for the existing material and identify the record precisely. Public access remains subject to lawful restrictions and redaction.
